KOOS - INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Submission guidelines and policies of the Journal of KOOS
Enacted in May 1996, Revised on November 1, 2019

 

1. Types of articles

1. Articles should be original works, case reports, reviews or invited papers related to optometry, contact lens studies, ocular examinations, visual optics, ophthalmology, or clinical case studies. If not related to the foregoing topics, the editorial board will determine whether it can be published.

2. Articles must be neither published nor under a review process in other journals.

3. Authors are responsible for the contents of their article and must not submit their works to other journals until the article has been accepted by the editorial board.

4. Once the article has been accepted, its copyrights belong to the Korean Opthalmic Optics Society (KOOS) and it cannot be published in another journal without permission from KOOS.


2. Submission and publication

1. Except for articles requested by the editorial board, the first author and the communication authors of the article submitted to KOOS must be members of KOOS.

2. For the submission, you must submit the manuscript and the completed designated submission forms 〔Pledge of Research Ethics, Copyright Transfer Agreement and Personal Information Utilization Agreement, Similarity Test Result, Author Checklist Form, and ORCID (included in the final version)〕 through the Journal of Korean Ophthalmic Optics Society paper submission webpage (https://koos.jams.or.kr).

3. The submitted article will be reviewed by more than three reviewers and permitted for publishing by the editorial board if the same is warranted. The reviewers who are experts in the domain of the submitted article shall be elected by the editorial board.

4. The article is orderly published according to the field of study (optometry, contact lens studies, ocular examinations, visual optics, ophthalmology, or clinical case studies) and submission date.

5. The Journal of KOOS is published quarterly (March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31).

6. If the edited article requested by the editorial board is not re-submitted within the 12-month period after the initial notification, it will be considered to have been redacted and the publication fee paid will not be refunded.

7. The submitted article is not returned to the authors regardless of selection of the article for publication.

8. Publication details and selected forms are available on the KOOS homepage (www.koos.or.kr).

9. Other correspondences can be sent by e-mail to the academic director.

3. Editorial guidelines

1. 1. Articles should be written in Korean or English on A4 paper (210 ㎜ x 297 ㎜) with only one column.

2. Figures (photographs) and tables should be large enough to be reviewed and be placed at the end of the article. Details and explanation for each of them have to be written in English, starting with “Fig.” and “Table”.

3. The contents of the article must follow the subsequent format:

1) Cover page: Title, Name of authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Key words, and Corresponding author (Name in English, Contact details, e-mail).

2) Main article: Introduction, Subjects and methods, Results and discussions, Conclusions, Acknowledgements, References, Figures and Tables with legends or captions, and Additional abstract (English/Korean).

3) Additional abstract at the end of the article should be written in English for the Korean article, and vice versa. However, it can be omitted for foreign authors.

4) The abstract should be consistent with the additional abstract (English/Korean), including purpose, methods, results, and conclusions.

5) Author names must be listed in the following sequence; first author, authors according to the academic contribution to the main contents of the article, and the corresponding author. The contact information of the corresponding author should be included in the cover page.

(1) The author should also indicate his or her affiliation and position in accordance with the "Guidelines for Securing Research Ethics (Ministry of Education, Revised 18.7.17)." If the author is a minor with no current affiliation, describe the last affiliation, title, and school year.

(3) The notation for the author should be in the order of department name (affiliated organization), university (school), position, location, postal code, country.

(4) The ORCID information of the author shall be specified under the corresponding contact information, with the superscript in lowercase letters in the same order as how the authors are listed below the title of the study.

(5) Key words should not be more than 5 and listed in order of importance.

(6) All figures and tables must have a title and a number identifying them, which will be referenced in the main text. They should be included at the end of the article.

(7) All units should be followed by the international system of units (SI).

4. References

1. References regarded as officially reviewed data must be written in English. Any references that are not cited in the main text cannot be listed.

2. When citing statistical data in the table of the article, references should be included at the bottom of the table.

3. In-text citations should be presented just after a period (.) or a comma (,), with parentheses and reference number in the text such as [3], [1,3], [1-3]. The reference list is ordered in the order of their appearance in the text, with parentheses and Arabic numerals such as [1], [2], etc.

4. The reference list must include all authors up to three. However, the first three shall be listed then followed by “~, et al.” in the case of more than three authors. For the in-text citations, a work by two authors ought to use both last names of the authors. A work by more than three authors should have the last name of the first author followed by “et al.”.

5. Examples of references

5. Mandatory submission and publication fee

1. There is a one-time mandatory submission fee of 60,000 for each article submitted to KOOS, which should be paid to the bank account of KOOS before the submitted article is reviewed.

2. Once the article is accepted by the editorial board, the corresponding author has to pay the publication fee and the additional charges for extra pages, design, editing, and so on. However, the requested articles are free of charge.

3. Publication fee for up to 5 pages is 100,000; additional fee for extra pages can be charged, with 20,000 per extra page.

4. Thirty extra issues can be given to the corresponding author. If extra issues are requested, an additional fee will be charged.


6. Copyright

1. The corresponding author must submit the corresponding “Copyright transfer agreement” to the editorial board of KOOS. The copyright of the submitted as well as an author agreement form transferring copyright to KOOS after the final draft shall be submitted.

2. After the copyright is transferred to KOOS, the entire contents of the article cannot be used in another publication, but the use of some of its parts is acceptable. In this case, the corresponding author must apply for an author agreement form using the copyright to KOOS and show the proof of publication through KOOS (journal title, volume number(issue number), year, etc.).

7. Research Ethics

1. For the policies on the research and publication ethics not stated in these instructions, the international standards for editors and authors (https://publicationethics.org/resources/resources-and-further-reading/international-standards-editors-and-authors) shall be followed.

2. If any research misconduct is discovered, the matter will be dealt with in accordance with the code of research ethics of KOOS.

1) Prohibited to submit manuscripts (3 years)

2) Removed from the list of manuscripts in journals and announced on the website of KOOS

3) Reporting of the relevant details to the Korea Research Foundation

8. Technical and editorial policy on gender differences

1. Biological sex or socio-cultural gender, as factors that can affect the outcome in cell experiments, animal experiments, or clinical studies (all studies on humans), must be described after recognizing the following items:

1) Cell or animal experiment study

(1) Describe the source, authentication, and biological characteristics of cell or animal sources

(2) Conduct research after including cultivation in the target cell or animal in the same way and describe the results due to the difference in sex

(3) If the study is conducted with only one sex as the subject, provide reasonable evidence why

2) Clinical study

(1) In sex technology, distinguish sex and gender and describe correctly

(2) Include males and females as the research subjects to conduct the study and implement a comparative analysis and present the study

(3) If the study is conducted with only one sex as the subject, provide scholarly reasonable evidence

1. Any items not reported in this guideline are determined by the editorial board of KOOS on the basis of common sense and convention.
